    The Attraction of Magnetotactic Bacteria

    March 30, 2015February 2, 2026

by Daniel P. Haeusser — Regular readers of Small Things Considered may recall our mention of the magnetotactic bacteria, organisms that can sense the Earth's magnetic field to orient themselves and distinguish up from down. The magnetotactic bacteria vary greatly in morphology, metabolism, and phylogeny, but they all share a little tool that permits the magnetic sensing underlying their coordinated movement (magnetotaxis).

by Merry Youle — Is there such a thing as an obligatorily multicellular prokaryote? We presented a case for their existence before, one that fueled our evolutionary imaginations. Unlike the myxobacteria, for example, which have...

Could We Have Started Out as Magnetotactic Bacteria?

    February 5, 2007January 21, 2026

by Elio — There are bacteria that have small magnets within them. Magnetotactic bacteria. The magnets consist of iron-containing crystals lined up in a row along the long axis of the cells, which endows the cells with the equivalent of a magnetic needle. These bacteria thus can sense the earth's magnetic field, which...
